Janka ends long drought with Wengen win

Carlo Janka of Switzerland
Carlo Janka delighted a Swiss home crowd
by winning a super-combined ski event on Friday, his first World Cup
victory in almost four years.
Janka held on to his lead from the morning downhill portion in the
afternoon slalom leg for a combined total of 2 minutes 29.31 seconds.
Frenchman Victor Muffat-Jeandet was a distant second, 1.31 seconds
off the pace, up from 28th after thew downhill. Slovenia veteran
Ivica Kostelic rose from 15th to third with a deficit of 1.38
seconds.
Janka's success was the 10th of his career but the first since a
giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia on March 5, 2011, for the
former overall World Cup champion.
"It is good to win in front of a home crowd. There were a few lows
(in the past). But I have no explanation why it works so well in
Wengen," janka said in reference to his third World Cup win there.
Kjetil Jansrud of Norway went out in the slalom after coming third in
the downhill, and failed to close the gap on overall leader Marcel
Hirscher. The Austrian holder, who was not competing Friday, has 836
points to Jansrud's 624.
The downhill leg took place on a shortened Lauberhorn course owing to
high winds in the upper parts.
Adverse weather, in the form of snowfall expected later Friday, has
prompted Wengen organizers to switch their weekend programme, with
the downhill now Sunday and the slalom Saturday.
